MSF20313 Certificate in Furniture Making Print Page

Program Overview

This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to perform the manufacture of free-standing furniture or built-in cabinets, and provide on-site assistance in the installation of furniture or cabinets involving known routines and procedures and some accountability for the quality of outcomes.
It reflects vocational outcomes for those performing assistant cabinet maker, assistant installer of built-in cabinets, and production operator within a cabinet making enterprise.

Personal Protective Equipment

You must use safety and other protective equipment required that is specific to your trade. Every student owes it to themselves, their family and Victoria Polytechnic to use and properly care for their personal protective equipment.

For the Cabinet / Furniture Making trades, the following is required:

  •   Safety Footwear / Boots - are compulsory and must be worn at all times. (Supplied by students)
  •   Protective Clothing - Overalls, workpants and shorts with ruler pocket in good condition must be worn.    Shoulders must be covered at all times and singlets are NOT permitted.
  •   Eye Protection - must be worn when advised. (Supplied by students)
  •   Ear Protection - must be supplied and be worn when advised by staff or signage. (Supplied by students)
  •   Dust Masks - Must be worn, P1 or P2, when advised.

Smoking Policy

All buildings within Victoria Polytechnic are classified as NON SMOKING zones.  Smoking is permitted only at scheduled break times. Please note that VU’s policy stipulates that there is to be no smoking within 10 metres of any doorway.

Start Time           8.00am

First break           9.45am till 10.00am

Lunch Break       12.30pm till 1.oopm

Afternoon Break   2.45pm till 3.00pm

Finish Time         4.00pm



To successfully complete the course, regular attendance is necessary.

Apprentices, your late arrival to class will result in your employer being notified by phone call; late return to classes from scheduled breaks will also result in your employer being notified by phone call.

Apprentices that are deemed missing from class but have been marked on attendance register will also have their employer notified that their apprentices are missing from class.

Attendance rolls/registers are marked 4 times per day




    Program Fees and Charges

    When you enrol in a course, re-enrol or change your enrolment, an invoice is generated with the amount you are required to pay. It is important for you to understand what fees are involved, and to ensure that your enrolment, fee and personal details are correct.

    Eligible students enrolled in a VE/TAFE course who are not eligible for VET-FEE HELP, may be eligible to pay for their course fees via instalments.

    This option is made available to students by a Payment Plan Option.

      Skills Recognition Online Tool

      If you have worked for a period of time and feel confident that you can do a particular job, but don't have a formal qualification, then Skills Recognition (RPL) will benefit you.

          Program Quick Guide

          Enjoy a satisfying career as a furniture builder or cabinet-maker with a basic pre-apprenticeship course to prepare you for the MSF31113 - Certificate III in Cabinet-Making.

          You will skill up to eventually work in a production environment, building free-standing furniture or built-in cabinets, or provide on-site assistance in installing furniture or cabinets.


            Program Structure

            To successfully achieve MSF20313 Certificate II in Furniture Making, students must complete a total of 13 units of competency:

            • 5 Core Units;
            • 8 Elective Units.

            Workplace Health & Safety

            Your health and wellbeing during your study with Victoria Polytechnic is of the highest importance to us.  It is important that you are aware of health and safety when you are attending workshops or practical labs at Victoria Polytechnic and in the workplace. Victoria Polytechnic requires students in this course to complete an course induction including Health and Safety and you are required to adhere to the Victoria University Health and Safety policy and procedures whilst on any Victoria University or Polytechnic campus.
