Success Story

Grassroots community advocate

Greens Member of Parliament Colleen Hartland has always been a strong community advocate.

"I enrolled in community development as a mature-aged student when I was 40 after many years in low paid, low skill jobs. I had been a strong community activist for more than 20 years and was already successful as an advocate for my community. But I knew I needed formal qualifications to go further.
VU gave me confidence that I could achieve and complete the course. The concurrent support was invaluable – things like writing skills and grammar that as a mature student I didn’t have at a high enough level. I felt supported all the way. Community development is a style of work that I continue to use in my advocacy for residents in my electorate. It also matches the philosophy of the Greens as we focus on empowerment, grassroots participation and community organising."
